Historic Top 100 breakthrough in Mathematics, global debut in Petroleum Engineering, and sustained leadership in strategic disciplines
KUALA LUMPUR, 25 MARCH 2025 - Universiti Malaya (UM) has achieved a new set of landmark accomplishments in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, reinforcing its position as Malaysia’s premier university and an increasingly influential global institution. The latest results reflect not only sustained academic excellence, but a deliberate and forward-looking strategy to position UM at the forefront of knowledge creation, innovation, and global impact.
“Universiti Malaya does not see rankings as an end in themselves,” said Vice- Chancellor Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Noor Azuan Abu Osman. “They are signals of our trajectory - of how far we have come, and more importantly, of how far we intend to go in shaping the future of knowledge and the world.”
UM remains the most represented Malaysian university in this year’s rankings, with 40 ranked narrow subject entries, five ranked broad subject areas, and 18 subjects in the global top 100. This breadth and depth reflect the University’s sustained competitiveness across a wide spectrum of disciplines and its growing global academic footprint.
Among the most significant milestones is UM’s debut in Petroleum Engineering at 34th globally, immediately placing the University among the world’s leading institutions in a field central to global energy systems and transition strategies. The result stands as UM’s highest-ranked subject in the 2026 edition.
“Our entry into Petroleum Engineering is not incidental - it is intentional,” the Vice- Chancellor noted. “We are building strength in areas that will define the future of economies, industries, and global sustainability. This is about positioning Universiti Malaya where it matters most.”
UM also achieved a historic national breakthrough in Mathematics, rising from 113th to 93rd globally and entering the global top 100 for the first time. This represents Malaysia’s highest-ever ranking in the discipline and the only Malaysian top 100 placement in Mathematics this year - driven by stronger international collaboration and deepening research impact.
“In disciplines like Mathematics, we are not only advancing rankings - we are advancing the intellectual foundations that underpin science, technology, and human progress,” he said. “This milestone reflects our commitment to excellence at the most fundamental level of knowledge.”, added Professor Azuan.
In Computer Science & Information Systems, UM continues to lead the nation, ranking 86th globally and remaining the only Malaysian university in the global top 100. In a field that sits at the heart of digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies, UM’s leadership underscores its strategic relevance in shaping the future digital landscape.
“In a world defined by rapid technological disruption, universities must lead from the front,” the Vice-Chancellor added. “Universiti Malaya will continue to drive innovation, shape digital capabilities, and contribute to the knowledge systems that will define the next era.”
UM has also strengthened its position in Business & Management Studies, improving to 104th globally while maintaining its status as Malaysia’s top-ranked institution in the field. This sustained performance reflects the University’s role in cultivating leadership, enterprise, and strategic thinking in an increasingly complex global economy.
Beyond individual subject achievements, the overall results highlight UM’s strong disciplinary ecosystem and its ability to sustain excellence across diverse fields. While some subjects recorded movement in rankings, the broader trajectory reflects meaningful progress in areas of strategic importance and continued globalcompetitiveness.
“At Universiti Malaya, excellence is not confined to a few disciplines - it is systemic,” said Professor Azuan. “We are building an ecosystem where teaching, research, and collaboration converge to create impact at scale in making difference for the world and in helping to solve current and future global problems and challenges.”
Amid rising global uncertainties - from geopolitical tensions and economic volatility to climate challenges and societal transformation - UM reaffirmed its commitment to playing a decisive national and global role.
“In times of uncertainty, institutions must stand with clarity of purpose,” he said. “Universiti Malaya will continue to fulfil its national responsibilities while embracing its global obligations to humanity - advancing knowledge, fostering new strategtic collaborations, and contributing meaningful solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges.”
Looking ahead, UM remains firmly committed to pushing boundaries and shaping the future.
“The challenges of the world, the challenges of tomorrow, and the challenges of humanity are not distant concerns - they are our mandate,” the Vice-Chancellor emphasised. “Universiti Malaya will lead boldly, create new frontiers of knowledge, and contribute meaningfully to global progress.”
